The main routes of Estonia’s road network were established as early as prehistoric times and have continuously changed and expanded over the centuries. The exhibition invites visitors to consider what roads, roadside landscapes, road signs and travellers looked like a hundred years ago, and how roads have shaped both the landscape and people’s lives.
The selection of photographs is based on the work of contemporary photographers and has been compiled from various photographic collections. The exhibition features images by more than 19 photographers.
“The starting point for the exhibition was the question: what did road environments look like a hundred years ago? Photographs provide the most immediate answer and allow us to share it with visitors,” said exhibition curator Merily Marienhagen.
Co-curator Ago Ruus considers it important that the photographers themselves are highlighted alongside the subjects depicted in the images. “It is thanks to the photographers of the time that these moments featuring roads and travellers have reached us,” Ruus said.
The photography exhibition Roads and Travellers was curated by Ago Ruus and Merily Marienhagen.
The exhibition is open to all visitors until summer 2027 in the seminar room of the Varbuse Post Station at the Estonian Road Museum. It will then continue its journey as a travelling exhibition to other locations.
